Henry recognised at East Anglian Maritime Awards

Henry first joined Cirdan on a sailing voyage as part of a group of sea cadets in 2017, sailing onboard Faramir. Since then he has continued to pursue offshore sailing, and was nominated for the Proficiency Category at the East Anglian Maritime Awards.

What made you decide to join the sea cadets?

I saw a poster in my school explaining that there was a possibility to have a sea cadet unit in the local area, so I took it home to my parents, who both joined as adult volunteers to assist with the set up of the unit.

How was your first voyage onboard Faramir in 2017?

Scary, it was very scary. I had done loads of dinghy sailing privately before, and with the sea cadets. But nothing offshore, so I didn’t really know what to expect. But the crew really helped put us at ease and I’m still loving sailing offshore because of this.

What do you enjoy most about sailing?

The freedom. When the sails are set and the engine is turned off making way, this is what I love!!! I love that you can go anywhere, but you’re not doing it while going through the hustle and bustle, you can make a brew and just watch as the world sails past.

How did it feel to join Faramir again in 2023 as a leader helping other sea cadets?

It made me feel like everything has paid off, in between my two voyages on Faramir I’ve been offshore many times, including gaining my RYA Day Skipper. It made me want to do it more, but helping others fall in love with something that I have soooooo much passion and love for.

What are your plans in terms of sailing in the future?

I want to log lots and lots of nautical miles by volunteering for a sailing trust, so that I can further my passion, love and knowledge of sailing by gaining my RYA YachtMaster. This will help me in the future to pursue a career in the maritime sector, specifically sail training.

How did it feel to win an award at the East Anglian Maritime Awards?

It was great to see myself and others being recognised for our passion and love for the maritime sector.
