Focus on people in care in February

As part of our 40th Anniversary celebrations throughout 2023, we are focusing on a particular area each month. February’s focus is people in care.

The Cirdan Sailing Trust works with a wide range of people from various backgrounds, including those in the care system. In 2022, we took a number of virtual schools sailing, who’s students are in care.

One leader from an Essex-based virtual school who sailed with us said: “Various young people developed skills beyond expectations, improving communications, engagement, forming friendships and maintaining them.”

When asked what they learnt from the experience, one of the students said: “I learnt how to sail one of the greatest boats ever and communication with others. Absolutely amazing the whole way through and I’m so grateful I got this opportunity.”

Another leader at an Oxfordshire school took 13 children and young people who are in care and one young leader care leaver, with two members of staff, and said the vibe was brilliant all week. They said: “Young people bonded and worked as a team sailing the boat, cooking and cleaning for 20 people all week. There were too many highlights to mention: friends made for life, teamwork, overcoming fears, driving a speedboat, a day at the seaside – and importantly, sailing the boat, learning navigation skills, about the sails, tides and ropes – and for everyone to end with a qualification, wonderful.”

A donation to our www.justgiving.com/campaign/cirdan40thanniversary fund will enable us to help fund young people in care to enable them to come on one of our voyages.

We can tailor a voyage to each group’s individual needs. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss opportunities: 01621 776684.
