Farewell Captain Bill

Bill on QG2

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of Bill Ewen, or Captain Bill as he was fondly known.

Bill joined Cirdan as skipper of Excelsior when we took on operation of the vessel in 2005. With his vast experience as a seaman, Bill soon became an established and much respected member of the Cirdan team.  After Bill left full time skippering to spend more time with his family back in Scotland, we were always pleased to welcome him back on board as a Relief Skipper.

Over the years, Bill skippered voyages for hundreds of young people who all worked hard to win his praise and hear him say they had done well and whilst Captain Bill was often described as an irascible Scot he was a great friend and mentor to a number of the crew who sailed with him.

Bill’s knowledge and experience is a great loss to the sail training world and he will be sadly missed by many.
